About this archive
This is one man’s archive, not a memorial. Its purpose is to gather the material relating to Chaudhary Multan Singh Varma and the Gujar Vidya Pracharini Sabha in one place, state where each item came from, and keep it clear which statements rest on a document and which rest only on memory.
Declaration of interest
This archive is maintained by his grandson, Vinay Verma — vinayverma5@gmail.com. A family connection gives access to material; it does not give proof. That is why the strictest rule is applied to the claims.
Why this archive
The educational institutions built in the villages of north-western Uttar Pradesh in the first half of the twentieth century mostly have no written history of their own. What survives comes in two forms: the institutions’ files, which are scattered and largely unavailable, and memory, which changes with each generation. Between the two sit one or two booklets, written in devotion and for that reason not quotable without checking.
This archive begins by admitting that gap. Every statement here carries its source and its evidential standing, and where there is no source the space is left open. Dates have not been filled in by estimate, illegible text has not been given an invented meaning, and printed inconsistencies have not been quietly repaired.
This makes some pages read as incomplete. That incompleteness is deliberate — an archive’s business is not to finish the story but to show how far the evidence goes.
Order of evidence
Sources are not equal. What a statement is worth depends on how far its source stood from the event and where its interest lay. This archive uses four tiers, in descending order of weight.

Two sources are catalogued so far — a tier 3 publication, and a tier 1 inscription. Where both give the same date, the statement rests on two independent sources; for the rest, a statement is still described as “recorded” rather than “established”. The source records
Language and spelling
- Hindi is this archive’s primary language; the English version is a translation, not an independent text. Where the two differ, the Hindi governs.
- Names, villages and titles keep the spelling their source uses. Where a source and the inscription disagree — as they do on the spelling of “Multan” — both forms are recorded.
- Terms of the period are kept rather than approximated: bigha and biswa for land, mauza for a revenue village, chaupal for a village meeting place, zaildar for a revenue officer, satsang, yajna, swang, padha. Translating them would change what they mean.
- Caste names appear as the sources have them, chiefly within the names of institutions and societies; removing them would obscure the historical record.

Send material
Papers, photographs, letters, receipts, registers, or something you were told — all of it is useful. There is no need to send an original; a clear photograph is enough, provided the whole page is visible to its edges.

- If it is an oral account — who told you, roughly what year, and whether they were present at the event or heard it themselves

Every item received is given an identifier, and how it reached the archive is recorded with it. A document’s value is settled less by its contents than by the route it travelled.
Corrections
If you object to a date, a name, a figure or an attribution, say so. A correction that comes with a document will be applied to the page; one that comes without will still be recorded — as an objection, evidence awaited.
Changes are not made silently. Rather than deleting the old text, the reason for the change is recorded, so it stays possible to see which way this archive has moved over time.
