Institutions

The societies, schools and hostels his connection with which is recorded in the sources — as founder, principal, office-bearer or teacher. Each entry states his role separately, because founding an institution and running one are not the same thing.

On the word "founder"

The sources call the same man "founder" in one place, "headmaster" in another, "treasurer" in a third. The word used here is the word the source uses, and the institutions' own records will test them further. Where a source does not make the role clear, it is marked unspecified.

Gujar Mahasabha

1940–1955

Appointed treasurer at the Ghaziabad session of 1940, and by the booklet's account held that post until 1955. The Mahasabha existed well before him — the Saharanpur school of 1919 and the Rampur Maniharan primary school of 1922 were both its efforts. His role: office-bearer, not founder.

The institution at Rampur Maniharan

Gujar Anglo Vedic School → Gochar Krishi Inter College and Gochar Mahavidyalaya

1 November 1943

Begun in the Arya Samaj temple building with twelve names entered for admission and three temporary teachers. He became its permanent headmaster on 14 February 1944 and remained principal until 30 June 1962, continuing to teach religion and culture at the degree college after retiring. The statue inscription calls it "a small school" that he had raised "to degree level" before retiring, and names him its founder-principal. In 1982 the institution's name was Gochar Krishi Inter College; the dates of the renamings are not recorded anywhere yet.

Opened in a rented house under the Sabha's resolution no. 5 — four months before the school. His role: as secretary of the founding society.

Earlier attempts

The institution of 1943 was not the first. Two attempts preceded it and both ended. The booklet itself gives this sequence, so calling 1943 "the first school" would be against the source.

Gujar school, Saharanpur

1919 · ended

Established by the Mahasabha opposite the DIOS office under Pradhan Maharaj Singh's supervision. Multan Singh Varma became its headmaster in May 1921 — six teachers, only two Gujar students. In June 1922 the school was formally transferred to Rampur Maniharan. His role: headmaster.

Primary school and hostel, Rampur Maniharan

June 1922 – 1926 · ended

Opened "by way of experiment" following the Jainbagh meeting of March 1922; school and hostel both in rented premises. The institution collapsed in 1926 — the hostel cots, library books and furniture were stored at Chaudhary Jaimal Singh's house. His role: head teacher; charge passed to Lala Dulichand from July 1925.

Where he taught

1926–1935

DAV High School, Muzaffarnagar

Teacher of geography. His student Jai Krishna Gopal passed with distinction and later became Vice-Chancellor of Roorkee University. Resigned in 1934.

1934–1944

Jat School, Muzaffarnagar

Headmaster, at the urging of Chaudhary Sher Singh of Saidpur, Bulandshahr. The school was raised to high school within four years, in 1940. Released on 3 February 1944; on leaving he paid 500 rupees for life membership of its general body.

The two date ranges above overlap, since the booklet also records his resignation from the DAV in 1934. Both statements are reproduced as given; see the list of discrepancies.

Established with the Sabha's assistance

Page 27 of the booklet lists five institutions established outside Rampur Maniharan. It describes the Sabha's part there as assistance rather than management, and gives no founding year for any of them.

No founding date for any of these is recorded in this archive, so they do not appear in the chronology. Nalheda also appears among the early subscription pledges — the nature of the connection is not recorded.

Jhabreda College

1982 · donation

A donation of 1,100 rupees in memory of his late wife, Shrimati Malkhani Devi; a donation to Rampur College was made in the same memory. His role: donor — the booklet states no connection with its founding.

Land and donations

The institution at Rampur Maniharan was not built on a grant but on donated land. On 21 September 1943 Shrimati Pirani Devi and Chaudhary Bharat Singh went to Deoband and registered 159 bighas 15 biswas in the Sabha's name. By the booklet's account land kept arriving "until the degree college was built", so that figure is an early one, not a final total.

Only the first registry carries a date; the booklet gives no date for the other four donations, which is why the order here is by area. The full table with standing notes and the arithmetic discrepancy is on the biography page.

The method of raising money is recorded too: the meeting of 13 August 1944 resolved that in every village of Saharanpur and Muzaffarnagar districts something be collected from both sides at the time of a wedding.

Sources

The entries on this page come from pages 4–31 of the booklet; the founding of the Sabha (13 June 1943) and the opening of the school (1 November 1943) are also confirmed by the statue inscription. The full source record and the list of discrepancies are on the References page.

The institutions' own records — committee proceedings, recognition certificates, Agra University affiliation orders, the Deoband registry and khatauni, board results — would confirm or contradict these entries independently.
