Shri Multan Singh Varma ji ki Sankshipt Jeevani

MSV-ARCH-PUB-001
Author
Om Prakash Gandhi, lecturer in geography, Gochar Krishi Inter College, Rampur Maniharan, District Saharanpur
Printer
Chaudhary Printing Press, Rampur Maniharan, Saharanpur
Editions
First 1982, second 2023, third 2024. The preface is dated 15 May 1982. Which edition the photographs come from is not yet established, and differences between the three texts have not been checked.
Composition
By the preface, the account was written from Multan Singh Varma's own telling, together with facts gathered here and there at second hand — partly direct testimony, partly compiled hearsay, mixed in a single text and nowhere distinguished.
Author's own caveat
He writes that he does not consider it entirely free of factual inconsistency, and undertakes to include proper corrections in the next edition. This archive's verification policy follows the condition the source set for itself.
Classification
Later publication (tier 3), written within the subject's lifetime and from inside the institution; since its basis is the subject's own account, it carries some tier 2 value too. The author was appointed in the same year Varma retired (1962).

The inscribed text · as carved

Lower plaque

जन्म — मृत्यु
12 अगस्त सन् 1900 ई. | 16 जनवरी सन् 1983 ई.

Born 12 August 1900 · Died 16 January 1983

Middle plaque

"This statue is of the late Shri Multan Singh Varma. On 13 June 1943 you founded the Gujar Vidya Pracharini Sabha, Muzaffarnagar–Saharanpur Circle. On 1 November 1943 you opened a small school at Rampur Maniharan, which, before retiring as principal of the inter college, you had raised to degree level. As long as this institution stands, your name will endure."

Upper plaque

“इस प्रतिमा का अनावरण ‘पदम श्री’ वीतराग संन्यासी स्वामी कल्याण देव जी महाराज के कर-कमलों द्वारा माननीय चौ. नारायण सिंह (भू.पू. उप-मुख्यमंत्री, उ.प्र.) की अध्यक्षता में दिनांक 2 अप्रैल, 1984 को सम्पन्न हुआ।”

"The unveiling of this statue was performed by the hands of 'Padma Shri' Vitarag Sanyasi Swami Kalyan Dev ji Maharaj, under the chairmanship of the Hon'ble Chaudhary Narayan Singh (former Deputy Chief Minister, Uttar Pradesh), on 2 April 1984."

The middle plaque repeats both 13 June 1943 and 1 November 1943 independently of the booklet — the only point in this archive where two sources meet on a date. The Hindi text above is given as carved, including its spelling of the name.

Discrepancies

Differences within the sources and between them that have not been quietly corrected. Against each is what this archive did about it.

Year of birth — 1900 or 1897

The inscription carves 12 August 1900; the booklet gives Jyeshtha badi doj, Samvat 1954, that is 1897. A difference of three years.

Inscription decides — 12 August 1900 recorded; the booklet's year kept alongside

The sequence of school years

Against a birth in 1900, the booklet's years for class four (1910), the middle examination (1915) and high school (1917) do not sit correctly.

Left standing as an open inconsistency; the years were not shifted — board and school records would settle it

Subtotals in the donation table · booklet page 18

50 bighas 5 biswas plus 68 bighas should total 118 bighas 5 biswas; the booklet prints 118 bighas 3 biswas. Likewise 118-3 plus 41-10 gives 159 bighas 13 biswas, against a printed total of 159 bighas 15 biswas.

Figures reproduced exactly as printed; the Deoband registry and khatauni would resolve whether the fault is the printer's or the deed's

Spelling of the name

The inscription and the booklet spell "Multan" differently in Devanagari.

Both forms recorded; this archive follows the booklet's spelling

Overlapping teaching appointments

The booklet gives 1926–1935 at the DAV, Muzaffarnagar, and also his resignation in 1934 to join the Jat school.

Both statements reproduced as given; verification against service records outstanding

Nalheda, in two contexts

Nalheda appears both among the early subscription pledges of 1944 and in the page 27 list of institutions established with the Sabha's assistance.

The nature of the connection is not recorded; the two have not been assumed to be one effort

Sequence of the institution's renamings

From Gujar Anglo Vedic School (1943) to Gochar Krishi Inter College (the name in 1982) and Gochar Mahavidyalaya — when the names changed is not recorded.

Each context uses the name its source gives; the sequence is left blank

Sources sought

Against each class is the statement it could establish or break. As any class is catalogued, the source line on the pages that depend on it will change.
